Ground water is the only reliable source of water for residents and businesses throughout Anoka County.  It must not be taken for granted.  In 2004, groundwater withdrawal amounted to about twelve billion five hundred fifty million (12,550,000,000) gallons.  As our communities grow and develop we increasingly rely on our ground water resource.   In some areas of Minnesota, excessive groundwater withdrawal has affected surface water features (e.g. lakes and wetlands) causing mandatory conservation and water use controls.  Anoka County is dedicated to maintaining a sustained groundwater resource into the future.

The quality of Anoka County’s groundwater is generally good providing safe drinking water to wells.  The contaminants found in private and public well water supplies are from either natural geologic sources (arsenic, radium, etc.) or pollution from commercial and residential chemical use.
